A
Ablation : Made-to-measure last process. If the
foot is narrower or the instep flatter than average, the last-maker
removes the excess material with a rasp.
Addition : Method of finishing lasts. If the foot is wider, the instep or the heel bigger than average, the last-maker corrects the last by adding thicknesses of leather.
Aniline : Finishing primer containing no soluble pigments, which gives a coloured or transparent film.
Anvil : A lump of iron shaped like a foot on which the shoemaker places the shoes he wants to nail.
Attaching : Action of fixing pieces of leather and stretching them to give the desired profile. The leather is fixed by means of temporary stitches which are removed later. The leg is attached to the insole by pulling on it enough for it to mould to the last without making creases.
Awl : Kind of steel punch with a wooden handle used to make holes for the stitching holding the welt, the double sole, the lining and the outsole together, for example.
